Charles Stewart Parnell was the most influential Irish nationalist politician of the latter half of the nineteenth century. He championed the Home Rule movement, campaigning for Ireland to establish its own Parliament separate from that at Westminster. His political and personal downfall was caused by a public adulterous scandal, and Irish Home Rule never took shape.
