Italian Migrations - HONOR313_FA18

malia callero

My name is Malia Callero and I have some Italian background! My great grandma, Rose Baldi, grew up in Lucca, Italy until she was 5. At that point, she and her family left the port of Genoa to migrate to America. They then arrived at Ellis Island undergoing an extensive self-inspection. According to the museum on the island I toured, this entailed body measurements, searching for symptoms of sickness and IQ. They were extraordinarily picky, including height. They would send people back to Italy on their 3-month boating trip across the ocean if they didn't meet their standards. She later made it to Washington State where she raised her family. My dad is one of 16 kids, due to his parents being strong Catholics, which means I have over 150 people in my immediate family! I have 42 first cousins, and a majority still reside in the North West. I moved from Washington to San Luis Obispo when I was 10 and never want to leave California. As for my own migration, I am interested in studying abroad in England next year. I'm also intrigued in taking an internship or brief job abroad when I graduate school in order to gain exposure to various cultures before settling down. I'm looking forward to taking my knowledge of Italy to new heights this semester.
