Reflection:

After taking this course, I have a newfound appreciation for Italy and it's history. I initially took the course because I may take a study abroad trip to Italy, and wanted to learn more about their culture and backstory. It took me awhile to find what I wanted to do for this final project, but I wanted it to be based on the core elements of the course, that being Italian Migrations. To be able to understand the impact of Italian Migrations around the world, I wanted to show the impact of both Italian immigration and emigration from across the world. Visual representation is arguably the clearest way to show both immigration and emigration across the world, and I like maps myself, so combining the two was what made the decision. This final project combines the ideals of both Nuovomondo and The Order of Things, which I watched at the Italian film festival earlier this year. Those two films were emblematic of my goal of showing, not just telling, the story of Italian Migrations, and the increasing diversity of the world. It came as no surprise that the Mediterranean region experienced the highest volumes of Italian migration, but I was quite surprised to see some of the other locations I found, specifically the amount of Italian migration to the Oceanic regions, namely Australia. I would definitely take this course again if I could, as I learned a lot about both Italian culture, migration patterns, and Italian literature which has helped shaped Italy to be what it is today.
