Italian Migrations - HONOR313_FA18

Madison Sharp

Hello, I'm Madison Sharp a sophomore majoring in the field of Nutrition. While my studies focus on food, my curiosity reaches far beyond simply one subject. I am always eager to learn more and expand my knowledge about all areas of life such as various cultures.

Since I was younger I always found the vastness of cultures all over the world very alluring. I had the opportunity to participate in the Lions Youth Exchange Program when I was 17 and traveled to Holland for a month. That length of time was spent staying with a host family for two weeks and going to an international camp for the remainder of my time. It was at that camp staying with 28 other individuals from all over the world that I was exposed to the many different ways of life we each personally experienced. I found that while our governments and societies varied we were all individuals who enjoyed similar activities and who faced similar struggles. I found it humbling that while we were all from very different places we could all easily put our differences aside and just be friends. It was simple. Despite any conflicts in the world we all discovered that we are all the same; we are all human. This trip was very eye opening while also adding to my already strong urge to see all of the world and learn about the cultures. An Italian, Federico is one of the many friends I gained during that experience. He always speaks so highly of Italy and urges me to come visit him in Rome someday. While I haven't found my way there yet I plan to experience all Italy has to offer in the future.

The unique insight into Italian culture that this class offers excites me. I found the class focus on immigration very intriguing as my grandmother immigrated from Russia when she was younger. Her stories of leaving her country and adapting to American culture are filled with both hope and hardships. I know each persons story of immigration is unique and I'm looking forward to studying more of these experience during this semester.
