Mark Twain in German-Language Newspapers and Periodicals

Key to Annotations in Translations

The column showing the original English version of a text created by Mark Twain uses the following marks to draw attention to additions, omissions, and other notable alterations from the original text:

{text}indicates words that are not part of the original text; added in the German translation.

[translated as "text"] or ["text"]   indicates specific word choices that deviate from the original meaning of the text.

<text>shows parts of the original that were omitted in the translation.
<extensive omission>indicates that longer parts of the original (1,000 words or more) were omitted in the translation.

Omissions to the beginning or end of the text are not indicated within the text; the headnote will give further information on whether an article is a full or partial translation of a given original.
