| Samuel L. Clemens, gehörte zu den hervorragenden Personen, die man aus allen Theilen des Landes berufen hatte, um bei dem am 13. November im Palmer House abgehaltenen Bankett zu Ehren des Generals U. S. Grant als Redner zu fungiren. Der berühmte Soldat, der gerade seinen Triumphzug um die Welt beendet hatte, war am 12. November von Galena, seiner früheren Heimath, nach Chicago gekommen und die Stadt war überfüllt von Menschen aller Art und Stände, die von nah und fern herbeigeeilt waren, den ruhmreichen Ex-Präsidenten zu sehen und womöglich die Hand zu schütteln. Da waren seine Schulgenossen aus West Point: Leute, die ihn noch als Gerber und Landverkäufer gekannt hatten; Soldaten, die im Kriege unter ihm gekämpft und ihn darum ihren Genossen nannten, sowie auch die höchsten Würdenträger der Ver. Staaten. | Samuel L. Clemens, was among the distinguished persons called from all parts of the country to speak at the banquet held at the Palmer House on November 13 in honor of General U. S. Grant. The famous soldier, who had just completed his triumphant campaign around the world, had come to Chicago from Galena, his former home, on November 12, and the city was crowded with people of all sorts and ranks, who had hurried from far and near to see and possibly shake hands with the glorious ex-President. There were his schoolmates from West Point: people who had known him while he was still a tanner and a land salesman; soldiers who fought under him in the war and therefore called him their comrade, as well as the highest dignitaries of the United States. |

Es ist wahrhaftig eine Schande, daß schon seit tausend Jahren bei allen Banketten der Welt, das Baby ignorirt wurde, als ob es überhaupt keine Bedeutung hätte. (Gelächter.) | “I like that. Du gingest hin, um sie so rasch wie möglich zu wärmen. Ja - so weit ließest du dich herab in deinem knechtischen Dienst, daß du an der Flasche saugtest, um zu sehen, ob das laue, fade Getränk - auch die richtige Mischung habe - drei Theile Wasser und ein Theil Milch, sowie ein wenig Zucker zur Verhütung von Leibschmerzen und ein wenig Pfeffermünz gegen das unsterbliche Aufstoßen. - Ich wette, Du schmeckst ihn noch heute, den widerlichen Trank. (Gelächter.) | When the thunders of war were sounding in your ears, you set your face towards the batteries, and advanced with steady tread; but when he turned on the terrors of his war whoop, you advanced in the other direction [translated as "you turned to retreat"] <- and mighty glad of the chance, too> {and when the chance presented itself, you left it to others to fight and win}. When he called for soothing syrup, did you venture to throw out any side remarks about certain services being unbecoming an officer and a gentleman? No. You got up and got it. When he ordered his pap bottle, and it wasn't warm, did you talk back? Not you. You went to work and warmed it {as quickly as possible}. You even descended so far in your menial office as to take a suck at that warm, insipid stuff yourself, just to see if it was right - three parts water to one of milk, a touch of sugar to modify the colic, and a drop of peppermint to kill those infernal hiccups. I can taste that stuff yet [translated as "I bet you can still taste the disgusting concoction today"]. {(Laughter.)} |
| Und wie viel unzählige Dinge hattest du noch zu lernen im Laufe der Zeit? Sentimentale junge Leute schenken noch der alten Sage Glauben, daß, wenn kleine Kinder im Schlafe lächeln, sie mit den Engeln Zwiesprache halten. Sehr schön, wunderschön! aber es ist nur Einbildung. - Es sind Winde in der Magengegend. Wenn der Balg zu seiner gewöhnlichen Stunde, das heißt, am Morgen um 2 Uhr, den Wunsch geltend machte, spazieren zu gehen, standest du nicht sogleich auf und sagtest mit einem Wort - welches ein Sonntagsschulbuch nicht gerade ziehren würde - du hättest auch soeben diesen Spaziergang vorschlagen wollen. (Großes Gelächter.) | And how many things you learned [translated as "you still had to learn"], as you went along! Sentimental young folks still still take stock in that <beautiful> old saying that when the baby smiles in his sleep, it is because the angles are whispering to him [translated as "when small children smile in their sleep, they are conversing with the angles"]. Very pretty, but too thin [translated as "it's only imagination"] - simply wind on the stomach, my friends! . If the baby proposed to take a walk at the usual hour - half past two in the morning [translated as "at two in the morning"] - didn't you rise up promptly and remark - with a <mental> addition that woudn't improve a Sunday school book much - that that was the very thing you were about to propose yourself? {(Lots of laughter.)} |
| O - du warst unter guter Zucht und wenn du im Zimmer auf- und abmarschirtest in deiner nächtlichen Uniform, dann lalltest du nicht nur nach Babies Manier, sondern versuchtest sogar mit deiner männlich rauhen Stimme Töne zu formen, um Lieder zu singen wie: „Schlaf Kindlein schlaf', Draußen steht ein Schaaf“. Was für ein Schauspiel für eine Armee von Tennessee und was für ein Aergerniß für die Nachbarn! Denn nicht jeder Mensch im Umkreis einer Meile hat Sinn für militärische Musik um 3 Uhr in der Nacht. And as you went fluttering up and down the room in your undress uniform, you not only prattled undignified baby talk, but even tuned up your martial voices and tried to sing! - “Rock-a-by baby in the tree top,” for instance. {What a spectacle for the Army of Tennessee} And what an affliction for the neighbors, too - for it isn't everybody within a mile around that likes military music at three in the morning. {(Laughter.)} |

| Die Idee, daß ein Baby nichts bedeutet: Ein einziges füllt nicht allein ein ganzes Haus, sondern auch noch einen Vorgarten. Dieses eine bringt mehr Beschäftigung als du und das ganze innere Department vollbringen kannst. Es ist unternehmend, unwiderstehlich, voll von gesetzlosem Thatendrang. Thue was immer du willst, ihm kannst Du nicht befehlen in Reserve zu bleiben. (Gelächter.) Ein - - Baby ist vollständig genügend. So lange Jemand seine fünf Sinne noch hat, wird er nicht für Zwillinge beten und zwischen Drillingen und offener Empörung besteht kein wirklicher Unterschied. - - Ja es war die höchste, die allerhöchste Zeit für diesen Toast, damit die Wichtigkeit der Babies endlich anerkannt werde. - Denket nur was die Zukunft für unsere jetzigen Wiegenkinder in Bereitschaft hält. 50 Jahre von heute sind wir Alle todt - so glaube ich wenigstens - und dann wird (wenn unsere Bevölkerung eben so rasch wie in der Jetztzeit zunimmt) unsere Fahne hoffentlich, über 200.000.000 Seelen wehen. Unser gegenwärtiger Staatsschoner, wird dann zu einem Riesenschiff geworden sein und die Säuglinge von heute, werden auf seinem Verdecke stehen. - Sorget, daß ihre Erziehung eine vollkommene sei, denn wir überlassen ihnen große, von uns engegangene [sic] Verbindlichkeiten. | The idea that a baby doesn't amount to anything! Why, one baby is just a house and front yard full by itself. One baby can furnish more business than you and your whole Interior Department can attend to. He is enterprising, irresistible, brim full of lawless activities. Do what you please, you can't make him stay on the reservation. Sufficient unto the day is one baby - as long as you are in your right mind don't you ever pray for twins. <Twins amount to a permanent riot;> and there ain't any real differencebetween triplets and an insurrection [translated as "open outrage"]. Yes, it was high time for a toastmaster to recognize the importance of the babies. Think what is in store for the present crop. Fifty years from now we shall all be dead - I trust - and then our flag, <if it still survive - and let us hope it may -> will be floating over a Republic numbering 200.000.000 souls, according to the settled laws of our increase [translated as"if the population continues to increase as quickly as it does at the moment"]; our present schooner of state will have grown into a political leviathan [translated as "into a giant ship"] <- a Great Eastern -> and the cradled babies of today will be on deck. Let them be well trained, for we are going to leave a big contract on their hands. |
| Unter den 3 oder 4 Millionen Wiegen, die jetzt im Lande in schaukelnder Bewegung sind, würden manche wie Heiligtümer bewahrt werden, wenn man nur die richtigen bezeichnen könnte. In einer dieser, liegt wohl der Farragut der Zukunft, seiner kommenden Größe unbewußt - und zahnt mit der ernstesten Miene von der Welt. - In einer anderen, ein werdender Astronom, dem aber einstweilen, die Milch seiner Amme begehrenswerther dünkt, wie alle Milchstraßen des gestirnten Firmaments. - In einer andern liegt ein großer künftiger Geschichtsschreiber, der ohne Zweifel, auch wie seine Vorgänger lügen wird, bis seine Mission auf Erden erfüllt ist. Und wieder in einer andern liegt unser zukünftiger Präsident, und über das Problem seiner so schon so frühen Kahlköpfigkeit brütet er in stillen Gedanken; und in einer mächtigen Reihe von Wiegen liegen 60.000 spätere Aemterjäger, die sich fertig machen ihm Gelegenheit zu geben, in einer Reihe von Jahren dasselbe Problem wieder ergründen zu wollen. Und noch, in einer anderen Wiege, irgendwo unter der amerikanischen Fahne, bemüht sich der einstige Kommandeur unserer Armee, unbekümmert um seine Größe und Verantwortlichkeiten, mit allen Künsten der Strategik, ob es ihm gelingen kann, seine große Zehe in den Mund zu kriegen, eine Kunst, die der ausgezeichnete Gast des Abends gewiß auch vor 56 Jahren probiert hat, und niemand bezweifelt, wohl mit Erfolg.“ | Among the three or four million cradles now rocking in the land are some which this nation would preserve for ages as sacred things, if if we could know which ones they are. In one of these cradles the unconscious Farragut of the future is at this moment teething - think of it! - and putting in a world of dead earnest, unarticulated and perfectly justifiable profanity over it, too [translated as "at this moment - unaware of his future importance - teething with the most earnest expression in the world"]; in another, the future renowned astronomer is blinking at the Milky Way, with but a languid interest - poor little chap! - and wondering what has become of that other one they call the wet nurse [translated as "the future astronomer, to whom at the moment the milk of his wet nurse appears far more desirable than all the Milky Ways of the starry sky"]; in another the future great historian is lying - and doubtless he will continue to lie until his earthly mission is ended; in another the future President is busying himself with no profounder problem than what the mischief has become of his hair so early, and in a mighty array of other cradles there are now some sixty thousand future office-seekers getting ready to furnish him occasion to grapple with that same old problem a second time {in a number of years}. And in still one more cradle, somewhere under the {American} flag, the future illustrious Commander in Chief of the <American> armies is so little burdened with his approaching grandeurs and responsibilities as to be giving his whole strategic mind, <at this moment,> to trying to find out some way to get his big toe into his mouth - an achievement which, <meaning no disrespect,> the illustrious guest of this evening turned his whole attention to some fifty-six years ago. And <if the child is but a prophecy of the man,> there are mighty few [translated as "there is nobody"] who will doubt that he succeeded.” |
