Edgar Allan Poe : Portrayal in the Media: an Annotated Bibliography of Edgar Alla Poe as a character

The Man With a Cloak

The Man with a Cloak. Dir. Markle, Fletcher. Prod. Ames Stephen. Perf. Joseph Cotten, Barbara Stanwyck. MGM, 1951. Film.

A young french woman comes to the US hoping to get money out of her boyfriend’s dying relative in order to fund a war effort  back home.  She is swarted by the old man’s house staff who want the money for themselves.  A mysterious character by the name of Dupin helps the French woman.

Poe behaves in a manner more fitting to the typical male in a movie made in this time period.  He is very well mannered and does not act drunk no matter how much he seems to imbibe. It is uncertain at what time in Poe’s life this may have all occurred, but it would appear to be pre-Virginia. He is poor and cannot pay his debts.

There are a few Poe allusions including a character with a pet raven.
