Edgar Allan Poe : Portrayal in the Media: an Annotated Bibliography of Edgar Alla Poe as a character

Nella Stretta Morsa Del Ragno

Nella Stretta Morsa Del Ragno. Prod. Giovanni Addessi. Perf. Kinski, Klaus Franciosa, Anthony, and Michèle . Mercier. Legacy Entertainment, 1971.

Otherwise known as “Web of the Spider” this movie is a remake of Danza Macabre.  The storyline is almost the same with only a few slight variations.  Again, Poe appears at the very beginning and end of the film performing the same role between Alain, the protagonist, and Mr. Blackwood the owner of the castle. Poe also claims that all his stories are based on true stories.  The very beginning credits shows Poe amidst one of his own horror stories before cutting away to him retelling the story in a bar. Poe also claims that all his stories are based on true stories. Alain meets Poe and then decides to spend the night in a haunted castle on a dare.

However, in this film Poe is first seen as a raving drunk that would normally be thrown out of the fine establishment he seems to be drinking in.  Indeed, all eyes in the place are staring at him.  Or perhaps he is acting the enthusiastic storyteller, since as soon as Alain agrees to spend the night at the castle, Poe appears to sober up.  Also different, in this movie Poe is not discouraging of Alain’s quest.  Poe’s appearance is shabby, and very little in the actor’s appearance lets the viewer believe they attempted to make Klaus Kinski resemble Poe.

This movie was billed as being based on Poe’s classic “Night of the Living Dead" which doesn't actually exist.  It was directed by the same man that did Danza Macabre, but this one is in color.
