Edgar Allan Poe : Portrayal in the Media: an Annotated Bibliography of Edgar Alla Poe as a character

Danza Macabra

Danza Macabra. Dir. Margheriti, Antonio. Prod. Lax Leo, and Marco Vicario. Perf. Steele, Barbara, and Georges Rivière. Synapse Films, 1964. Film.

A young reporter gets a chance to meet Edgar Allan Poe while the author is visiting in London.  While conversing with Poe, another man who had been speaking with the author, bets the young reporter that he cannot spend a night up in the Lord’s castle.  Against Poe’s advice, the journalist takes the bet.

Poe is seen at the very beginning and the very end of the movie.  When interviewed by the journalist he claims that all his stories are actually non-fiction works.  He appears to be drinking at ease and discusses the topic of death calmly with the reporter.  He never shows signs of inebriation. Poe only becomes slightly distressed to hear the journalist has taken the bet.

The movie was originally filmed in Italian.  The original title translates loosly into Horror Dance, but was given Castle of Blood for U.S. release.  Scenes that were cut from the US version are now available, but will not have English dubbing.
