Edgar Allan Poe : Portrayal in the Media: an Annotated Bibliography of Edgar Alla Poe as a character

Descendant

Descendant. Dir. Christman, Kermit, and Margot Hartman. Prod. Christman Kermit. Perf. London, Jeremy, Katherine Heigl, and Arie Verveen. Audio Visual Enterprises/ Del Mar Productions, 2003. Film.

This movie is about descendents of Poe.  The basis of the plot is that the real Usher (from Fall of the House of Usher) was angry about Poe’s story and so he cursed Poe and all his descendents. The movie then is mostly about Ethan Poe (Jeremy London), a descendent of Poe (despite Poe never having any children in real life) as a writer caught in his ancestor’s shadow. He meets Anne Headrow (Katherine Heigl) who is somehow descended from a cousin of Virginia Clemm (Poe's real life wife and cousin), Emily. This is actually rather fitting, since the two then start an affair with each other.

Poe, played by Arie Verveen, appears as a ghost that haunts Ethan though it is unclear if it is really a ghost or just Ethan’s madness. Poe mocks Ethan and does little else. He is mostly sane mostly but sometimes goes into a crazed rant.

There are a few references to Poe’s writings that appear throughout the film.
