This book contains three seperate stories.  The first story is the one about Edgar Allan Poe and is titled "Poe".  It is written in a free-form style of prose and tells Poe's history in what appears to be chronological order.  Most of the passages are excerpts from various stories and letters of Poe and letters from others that were close to Poe or family or Poe. These excerpts are tied together by small passages letting the reader know where in the story the reader is.  One such detail is "Virginia Clemm Poe: slender, delicate, with a tendancy toward weakness of the lungs..." After this follows a line from Poe's "Three Sundays in a Week."   The whole work begins with a letter that was written by David Poe Jr., Poe's father.  It ends with quotes about the misfortune met to the attempted monuments made for Poe's grave.

It is not so much of a biographical fiction as it is mostly strung together by words of Poe himself.  However, Metcalf has taken liberty as to where and when Poe's art mirrored his life.
