Edgar Allan Poe : Portrayal in the Media: an Annotated Bibliography of Edgar Alla Poe as a character

The Black Throne

Zelazny, Roger Saberhagen, Fred. The Black Throne. New York: Baen : Distributed by Simon & Schuster, 1990.

In this science fiction work, Edgar Allan Poe and his equivalent, Edgar Perry, from another dimension, trade places in each others world.  This is due to their mutual friend, Annie, whom they’ve been meeting in their dreams since they were children. Now, Edgar Perry must save Annie and put everything back to normal.

The story is riddled with bits and pieces of Poe’s life including a bad guy named Griswold and a nurse named Ligeia.  It is set when Poe would have been serving in the army.  The book also suggests that the poem Annabel Lee is about this Annie.  Despite having different last names, both Edgar’s had the same childhood of actor parents and were both adopted by the Allens.  Edgar Perry describes Poe as being “a trifle melodramatic”.
