Edgar Allan Poe : Portrayal in the Media: an Annotated Bibliography of Edgar Alla Poe as a character

Child of Night - Anne Edwards

Edwards, Anne. Child of Night. 1st ed. New York: Random House, 1975.

In this book, the main character, Eddie Polk, believes he is the reincarnation of Edgar Allan Poe.  He moves in to a house with his aunt, Marianna,  and his younger female cousin, Ginnie Clemmens, whom he also believes to be the reincarnation of Virginia Clemms.  It is told in the first person, although the narrator switches from time to time. At times it's from the point of view of Ginnie, she is 13 years old at the beginning of the book and studying Edgar Allan Poe literature in class.  At other times it is told from the point of view of Eddie, whose not exactly of stable mind and starts plotting rather dangerous things.

The book is divided into five parts.  It flows easily. The mood is gloomy without being overly morose as to make it hard to swallow.  There's not much of actual Poe material except for a few quotes here and there.  It is almost like a long version of what could have been a Poe style plot.
