Wunderkammers, or cabinets of curiosities, were popular items in early modern European upper-class homes. They often contained an array of fascinating objects, either fabricated or found in nature, which were designed to encourage wonder and discovery. Some of Frank’s items here nod to the two Alice books, such as the playing card, toadstool, teacup, and medicine bottle. However, the handkerchief is an allusion to “Sylvie and Bruno Concluded,” in which a model of the universe is created from handkerchiefs.
