Akira’s award-winning submission to the competition was a multipart work composed of a novella, oil painting, and mural drawn in pencil, ink, pastel, and acrylic. He explains how he was inspired by the ancient practice of armies parading wild beasts through a city as exotic trophies. In contrast, the convoy seen here is itself made up of animals. And in keeping with the general madness of Wonderland, the military band plays nothing but discordant ruckus while marching with fervent intensity toward its final battle at sea.
