Hernandez combines her love of anthropology and Victorian culture in presenting a misplaced box of specimens retrieved from “the furthest reaches of the [British] Empire”—the world of Wonderland. She imagines that the assortment of items, collected by the young explorer Alice and destined for inspection by Professor Charles Dodgson of Oxford, “would most likely end up in a Victorian curio cabinet.” In addition to the physical evidence she assembled, her field journals detail the creatures and experiences encountered along the way.
