Shentong’s pen-and-acrylic illustration visualizes Alice’s changes in response to the physical environment and fantastic emotional challenges she encounters during her adventures in Wonderland. With gargantuan, otherworldly mushrooms seemingly erupting from her shoulders, Alice’s body transforms, presenting as a kind of cervical dysmorphia. Her distortion reflects the artist’s own physical growth between the time she read the Alice books as a child and then again as an adult.
