Carroll and Friends
Juliet DeVette
2015
Can you think of the twelve people with whom you would want to share a final meal? DeVette explores this question with a mash-up of Lewis Carroll’s literary creations she believes he “felt closest to” and Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Last Supper. In her artist statement she draws faint parallels between Jesus Christ and Carroll: neither of them married and both were important teachers. In contrast to the original painting, DeVette included 42 panels in the coffered ceiling in the background—a number Carroll used repeatedly in his works.
