The Looking Glass

Ariana Papademetropoulos
2012

Long fascinated by mirrors and the way in which they show a slightly different version of reality, Papademetropoulos explores the nature of self and perception with two oil paintings, one depicting Alice, and the other a mirror image of her—but altered in significant ways. In her artist statement she poses the questions “Are they reflections, or two different girls? Which one is real?” followed by a postulation that with mirror worlds “What lies on the other side is a place where the impossible becomes possible and the rules of physics, time, and space no longer exist.”
