Alice of the Mysterious Country

Emily Warren
2013

This multilayered illustration, the summation of Warren’s research into East/West cultural transmission, depicts scenes from Alice’s journey in Wonderland through the prism of Japanese art. Many of the images are adapted from the ukiyo-e genre, which translates as “pictures of the floating world.” To create a layered woodblock effect, she used pen-and-ink and special Copic markers as well as layered paper to create the illusion that episodes in Alice’s journey interlock harmoniously.
