Edgar Allan Poe : Portrayal in the Media: an Annotated Bibliography of Edgar Alla Poe as a character

Death: At Death's Door

Thompson, Jill. Death: At Death's Door. London; New York: Titan Books; DC Comics, 2003

This graphic novel is set in modern times.  It is a work of fantasy.  Death, the anthropomorphic personification of death, has her house over-run with unwanted guests.  Her sisters, Delirium and Despair (the anthropomorphic personifications of delirium and despair), are there trying to help her.  One of the unwanted guests is Edgar Allan Poe.

In the novel, Poe is potrayed as being smitten with Despair.  Death comments that this would make sense since Poe spent most of his life in the throes of despair.   Indeed he is overcome with inspiration at the sight of her and calls for an inkwell.  He is drawn in manga style with no caricature. He only has three lines.  Mostly he just looks on to despair in silent adoration like a love sick fool.
