Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

Seal of Latin Emperor Henry of Flanders (DO BZS.1958.106.636)

By Alexandra Berardelli '25
This seal belonged to the second Latin Emperor, Henry of Flanders (ruled 1206-1216) for the purpose of protecting and authorizing imperial documents. There are images and inscriptions on both sides, every one telling of the emperor's profound authority over his empire and during the Crusades. In addition, both sides display certain religious and military images to propose a narrative that legitimizes both the emperor's rule over his empire, but also his decision to go on the Crusades, therefore justifying the cause.
