In Putney Swope (1969), Arnold Johnson starred in the title role, but Robert Downey Sr. provided Swope's voice. The uses and abuses of blackface have changed over time, but a lingering anxiety about whiteness being inauthentic in comparison to blackness continues to fuel the sorts of racial formations that keep blackface alive.
