One of forty designed by Elmer’s Case Company in Loveland, Colorado, this two-seat oak bench carried a price tag of one hundred and five dollars in 1966. Distinct from the other oak bench in the collection, this upholstered piece features a widely reclined backrest. Taliesin originally designed benches like these for the Enos Mills Auditorium, but superintendent Novak forwent this option for the portable Kruger Stackable Folding Metal chairs.Throughout the manufacture process, the color and fabric of the upholstery was a contested matter. Taliesin and Rocky Mountain National Park officials had difficulty reaching an agreement on a color that suited both Taliesin’s design preference and the budget for the Mission 66 renovations. While superintendent Novak hoped for an alternative orange fabric, Taliesin insisted upon Moss Rose Manufacturing Company’s K13720N Color #58 with its “perfect blend of rust and rose”.
While it is unclear if the artifact has been reupholstered, a few of these two-seat oak benches remained in the auditorium from their purchase date in 1966 until 2006.
