Housing Inequality in America

Homeownership Rates by Racial Category

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the homeownership rate in the country overall in 2020 was 66.6%. The figure below highlights the rates of home ownership by race in the U.S. since 1994. When disaggregated by race the differences are stark. White alone comes in at 71.3%, while White Non-Hispanic homeownership rates are even higher at 75%. Hispanic or Latino rates are at 50%, all other races alone are at 57.4%, while Black alone trails behind at 45%. How do we explain such a stark disparity?
