Key: Portico AB, Acroterio CD, e Frontespizio E contemporanei, per ciò che dimostra la interna lor costruttura, ed aggiunti posteriormente da Agrippa alla parte rotonda del Pantheon, come si ravvisa alle lettere DF, BG, H, dalla medesima costruttura sciolta da quella del tempio. I Parte dell’acroterio interotta col frontespizio K sotto il Pontificato d’Urbano VIII per ridurre le parti CE, L, in forma di torri ad uso de’ Campanili. M N Circonferenza della finestra, per cui scende il lume nel tempio. O Colonne solide di marmo Sienite di palmi 6.6. di diametro, e di 63.8. d’altezza. 2, e 3 Canali e forami ne’quali erano incastrate le lettere di metallo della iscrizione d’Agrippa. Così Giovenal nella Satire 3. ove pur dice: In vallem Egeriæ descendimus et speluncas Dissimiles veris; quanto praestantius esset Numen aquæ viridi si margine clauderet umbras Herba, nec ingenuum violarent marmora tophum *Tempio di Bacco, or di Sant' Urbano. Signature: Cavalier Piranesi F(ecit) Title and Description: View of the fountain and the Grotto of Egeria outside the Porta Capena, now San Sebastiano. “At the place where Numa used to meet his sweetheart at nightime.” So Juvenal writes in Book 3 of the Satires, where he also says: “We wander down the hill to Egeria’s valley and a grotto unlike the real thing. How much more palpably present the fountain’s spirit would be, if a grassy border surrounded the water, and no marble profaned the native tufa!” *Temple of Bacchus, now Sant’Urbano. Title: Veduta interna della Villa di Mecenate. Key: Dall’iscrizione L.OCTAVIVS.L.F.VITVLVS C.RVSTICIVS.C.F.FLAVOS.INTER.III.VIR.D.S.S.VIAM.INTEGENDAM.CVRAVERE., che leggesi affissa ab antico nella finestra perpendicolare A, e dal vedersi che la volta, la quale copre la via fa con la villa un sol corpo di fabbrica, siam persuasi, che tutto l’edifizio non fosse una villa, ma un’opera fatta per uso del Comune di Tivoli, e per raffrenare la decrescenza della pendice, come vedesi dall’Iscrizione, che per mantener la via, ne fu ordinato il coperto e la volta da quel Senato. In fatti le fornici sotto la volta segnata col B, non avendo segno che fussero chiuse con veruna imposta, mostrano d’essere state tante taverne pubbliche. Signature: Piranesi F(ecit). Title: Interior View of the Villa of Maecenas Key: From the inscription L.OCTAVIVS.L.F.VITVLVS C.RVSTICIVS.C.F.FLAVOS.INTER.III.VIR.D.S.S.VIAM.INTEGENDAM.CVRAVERE., that one reads, affixed in the ancient method on the perpendicular window A, and from what one observes, that the vault that covers the street with the villa, makes one whole structure, we are convinced that the entire building was not a villa, but a building made for the use of the Commune of Tivoli, and to counteract the incline of the hill as one sees from the inscription, that to maintain the street, the cover and vault were ordered by that Senate. In fact, the archways under the vault labeled B, lacking any evidence of having been closed with shutters, demonstrate that there were many public taverns. Signature: Made by Piranesi.
Title and Description: Veduta del Tempio di Bacco, inoggi Chiesa di Sant' Urbano, distante due miglia da Roma fuori della Porta di San Sebastiano. Esso è il più intero di questa forma che sia rimaso a Roma ai giorni nostri, sì nell’esterno che nell’interno. La sua Ara si conserva peranche nel Pronao colla iscrizione εCTIAI ΔIONYCOY AπPωNIANOC IζPOΦANTHC: Ara di Bacco, Aproniano Sacerdote. Key: 1. Muri fra gl’Intercolonnj del Pronao, e barbacani fatti da Urbano VIII per riparar la rovina del Tempio. 2. Chiavi delle catene di ferro impiegatovi per lo stesso fine. 3. Avanzo dell’antica casa dell’Edituo. Signature: Presso l’Autore a Strada Felice nel palazzo Tomati vicino alla Trinità de’monti Signature 2: Gio(vanni). Batt(ista). Piranesi Arch(itetto). F(ecit). Title and Description: View of the Temple of Bacchus, today the Church of Sant’Urbano, two miles from Rome outside the Porta San Sebastiano. This temple is the most intact of this form that remains in Rome today, both in its exterior and interior. Its Altar is also preserved in the Pronaos with the inscription: εCTIAI ΔIONYCOY AπPωNIANOC IζPOΦANTHC: Altar of Bacchus, Apronian Priest. Key: 1. Walls in between the columns of the Pronaos, and fortifications built by Urban VIII to repair the remains of the Temple. 2. Anchors for the iron chains employed for the same purpose. 3.
