The Hebrew phrase שלום עליכם (shalom aleichem) literally means "[May] peace [be] upon you!", and is a greeting in traditional Hebrew and Yiddish. The 1964 musical Fiddler on the Roof wasbased on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman.
