Lamed Shapiro

In 1911, the Yiddish short story writer Lamed Shapiro (1878-1948) moved from Warsaw and settled in New York. There he opened a small, vegetarian café called “Central” with his wife. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the café failed and closed soon after it opened, mostly because Shapiro would only reluctantly charge his customers, many of whom were his good friends.
