Saul Bellow

The novelist Saul Bellow (1915-2005), born in Canada and raised in Chicago, lived and worked in New York during most of the 1940s and 1950s. In his novels, he wrote about the cafeterias—and the Jews who frequented them—which had become common in the city since the Great Depression.
