Franz Werfel

Franz Werfel (1890–1945) was born and raised in Prague, where he was friendly with Franz Kafka, Max Brod, and Willy Haas. He began his career as an expressionist poet and later established himself as a dramatist and prose writer as he mingled with Jewish writers in the cafés of Vienna and Berlin. Although born to Jewish parents, his humanistic religiosity drew on both Judaism and Christianity, which is reflected in his writing.
