The Space Age Hits the Road: Visionary Car Designs in America

1959 Cadillac Cyclone

Children peer at the interior of GM’s Cadillac Cyclone. Among its features was a timesaving passenger entry system. At the touch of a switch, roof panels were raised on the clear plastic dome, and passenger doors sprang open and slid backwards on ball bearings. The Cyclone paid homage to the aviation-minded aesthetic of the age, with such visual cues as the two large taillights that resembled jet exhausts and the prominent, if not impractical, tailfins.
