Most of the instruments on the dashboard were nonfunctional, included for illustrative purposes only. One of the most intriguing ideas was a built-in guidance system that would communicate with electrical wires embedded in the roadways, creating an accident-free way of navigating what a GM press release called the “superhighways of tomorrow.” More than sixty years later, such a development seems only a remote possibility.
