1956 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket

With its projectile-shaped front end, gold metallic paint, vestigial tailfins, and taillights shaped like jet exhausts, Oldsmobile’s contribution to the 1956 Motorama resembled an exotic vehicle from a science fiction story. The media had a field day with it, declaring that Oldsmobile was “ready to launch a golden rocket.” The car nearly lived up it name, thanks to its lightweight, fiberglass body and 275-horsepower V8 engine.
