The Space Age Hits the Road: Visionary Car Designs in America

1959 Ford Fairlane 500

The giant Atomium, a model of an iron crystal built for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels, offered the perfect backdrop for the Ford Fairlane 500 Victoria Club coupe. In contrast with the horizontal lines on the front grilles of many cars from the period, the Fairlane was decorated with four rows of floating stars just above the front bumper. A long streak of chrome ran down the side panels, culminating at the tailfins. The car was named after Henry Ford’s enormous Fair Lane estate in Dearborn, Michigan.
