The Space Age Hits the Road: Visionary Car Designs in America

1956 Pontiac Club de Mer with large dorsal fin

A striking feature of the Club de Mer was the large dorsal-like fin rising up from the rear deck of the car. Pontiac described its use as follows: “The fin not only adds fleetness to the car’s appearance but also functions as a stabilizing influence during operation.” However, perhaps intentionally, it bore a striking resemblance to a shark fin knifing through the water. Over the years, many auto manufacturers have added design touches that give their cars a muscular, even menacing appeal.
