The Space Age Hits the Road: Visionary Car Designs in America

1958 Chrysler Windsor

When Cadillac came out with aircraft-inspired tailfins in 1948, Chrysler’s chief designer Virgil Exner knew the style would prove popular and that his company, widely known for its conservative-looking models, had to adopt them in order to survive. By 1955, Chrysler had thoroughly revamped their automotive lineup, in a makeover Exner promoted as the “Forward Look.” The new vehicles were an instant success. This 1958 Windsor included midsized tailfins, dual headlights, and Chrysler’s highly touted “Torsion-Aire” suspension. Chrysler marketed the vehicle as a luxury-style car at an affordable price.
