New GM design chief Bill Mitchell, who succeeded Harley Earl, favored a more chiseled look, trimming both the amount of chrome on the car and the size of its tailfins. The short front end and elongated overhangs that extend beyond the rear wheelbase convey the impression of a rocket ship. Only 1,450 of these convertibles were produced that year, making it highly coveted by collectors today.
