The Space Age Hits the Road: Visionary Car Designs in America

1956 Lincoln Premiere Luxury Sedan

Soon after the Ford Motor Company bought Lincoln in 1922, it positioned the line as a direct competitor to GM’s luxury Cadillac division. At nearly nineteen feet in length and weighing more than two tons, the styling of the 1956 Premiere belied its mammoth proportions. Low, rounded bumpers and unusual jet-pod exhausts complemented its sleek exterior. The two-door coupe lacked vertical window posts, further accentuating the streamlined design. Along with a muscular V8 engine, the car came equipped with power steering, brakes, windows, and seats.
