Storyspace's Pathbuilder Tool in the 1992 Mac Edition of afternoon

Link paths in Storyspace are created and controlled by authors from a dedicated Path Builder tool. Michael Joyce used paths firstly as a lexia management tool that would help the author and the reader orientate among the multiple narrative sequences. For example, in afternoon, a story a path named “Lolly(call)” gathers connections related to Peter’s attempt to call Lolly. “Lolly(later)”, respectively, groups connections to events after the call.

On the illustration above, a path "Lolly" is highlighted and all 17 lexias asigned to it are displayed.
