The Challenges of Born-Digital Fiction: Editions, Translations, and Emulations: The Multimedia Accompaniment to the Print Edition

Link Names & Paths in the 1997 CD-ROM Edition of Samplers

Deena Larsen, more than any pre-Web hypertext author working on the Storyspace platform, leveraged the link names and paths for nesting narratives within a story. As this image of "Century Cross," one of the nine hypertexts from Samplers, shows, she embeds a story about her struggles with the software, calling the problem, "Old Man Coyote:" "I called Eastgate again / because calling the 1-800 / number is a hellish lot / easier than admitting / Old Man Coyote is in my / system once again . . ."

The coyote, the trickster character of Southwestern lore, is an important figure in Larsen's work, one she credits for guiding her in her work (Larsen, "The Trickster," 15-16).
