"Feeding Neddy"
"Feeding Neddy" (1882) reminds us today of a culture dependent upon animals, and reminded children in the 19th century that work animals truly needed humans to remember to feed them: "eat away, Neddy, Be quick and be steady!" It has a bouncy eighth-note tune by T. Crampton, and an illustration of a young boy feeding his donkey. This song thus gives vital messages about animal welfare in an engaging format for children.
This song was re-titled and repurposed for both productions of Charlotte's Web Stage One, Richmond, IN in 2020, and in 2025, with our Bands of Mercy singing "Feeding Master Templeton" in place of "Feeding Neddy" as we honored the hungry rat in the production!
Score: The Band of Mercy Advocate, Vol 3, 1882.
