"Marching 'round the world"
"Marching ‘Round the World" (Eddy #7)—words anonymous, music by F. Abt. Another militant song, “marching ‘round the world” to “undo the heavy burdens, / Where want and sorrow reign” (v. 1) but which becomes specifically about the animal-welfare movement, “breaking off the fetters, / On the dumb and weary laid” (v. 2) as the chorus clearly identifies the “Band of Mercy” and, in first-person, all singers, “and we’re marching ‘round the world” (v. 4). Abt’s tune feels almost like a college-football-team’s spirit song in its passion and energy. It is significant to note the popularity of this song, appearing in both Eddy's 1897 book but also almost 30 years later in the Band of Mercy journal, July 1913.
