"Marching 'round the world"
"Marching ‘Round the World" (Eddy #7)—words anonymous, music by F. Abt. Another militant song, “marching ‘round the world” to “undo the heavy burdens, / Where want and sorrow reign” (v. 1) but which becomes specifically about the animal-welfare movement, “breaking off the fetters, / On the dumb and weary laid” (v. 2) as the chorus clearly identifies the “Band of Mercy” and, in first-person, all singers, “and we’re marching ‘round the world” (v. 4). Abt’s tune feels almost like a college-football-team’s spirit song in its passion and energy.
