"If Any Little Words of Mine"
If Any Little Words of Mine (Band of Mercy, Nov. 1910): Written by Arthur Henry Brown, this is a vital message to come out of 1910, end of the Gilded Age but as much poverty existed in England and poverty. Its essential message to young people is that their “little words” and “little songs” can make a difference: “a heart the lighter” or “ease the burden of another.” God stands behind their small acts to amplify them: “God help me speak the little word, / And take my bit of singing, and drop it in some lonely vale, / To set the echoes ringing” (v. 1). God can “give me love and care and strength / To help my toiling brother;” “God give me” these, the young singers sig in the final refrain (v. 2). Its melody is lovely but difficult, climbing into the upper registers. Our family of talented singers, the Royers, not only agreed to learn it, but to learn it in harmony.
