Blogging Assignment Prompt
Leading Discussion and Blogging
This assignment examines the intersection of storytelling and digital media. Each week, one student will examine one course reading in conversation with a contemporary issue related to race and ethnicity. When approaching your blog, imagine you are preparing it for an informed public audience. Blog comments should engage the blog content in relation to course themes.
PART I. BLOG COMPONENTS
General Criteria
- Blogs are due at 10 am, the day before class, 500-750 words, Max 20 points
- Create a new page, “Title by Your Name”
- Save the link to your portfolio
- Make your Blog a “Path” on the Race and the Digital Blog
The blog will be organized into four sections, Media Summary, Reading Summary, Analysis, and Discussion. For an example of the format, see Blog Title by Joe Bruin on our Scalar page.
Media Summary
- Identify a related video, newspaper article, or image and post it to your blog
- To Upload a Media File on Scalar
- Select “the Download Icon,”
- Select “Internet Media File”
- Create a “Title” for your media file and paste link into the “Media File URL”
- Select “Save and View”
- To Upload a Media File on Scalar
- Summarize the author’s primary findings/arguments
- Remember to post proper citations for your multimedia

Reading Summary
- Summarize the author’s primary findings/arguments
- Post proper citations for your reading
Analysis
- Discuss the two texts alongside one another, asking yourself how the reading helps us to better understand the connection between race & the digital.
- Include internal links to your classmates’ posts and other relevant materials
Discussion (15-20 minutes)
- Post three discussion questions that consider these two pieces together
- Guide your classmates through a tour of the blog
- Explain how and why you chose your source
- Identify what audience may be interested in your post
- Lead a short discussion from the questions you generated and comments you received
PART II. BLOG COMMENTS
This is a collective blog and you are required to engage with your classmates’ posts. This means viewing their media, reading its content, and leaving a constructive comment for the author.
General Instructions
- Comments are due before class
- 50-100 words each
- 7 comments are due over the course of the quarter
- Max 15 Points
To Create a Comment
- Scroll down and select the Comment Bubble.
- Insert “Comment Title” and “Content.”
- Select “Submit Comment.”
- Responses must be approved before becoming visible.
- To approve your comment, Select “Dashboard,” Select “Comments,” Select “Edit,” from the “Live?” drop-down menu select “Yes.”
