Housing Inequality in America

Housing Needs on Tribal Lands

Native Americans on tribal lands have some of the worst housing needs in the United States. High poverty rates, low incomes, overcrowding, poor infrastructure and underfunding from the federal government have created a dire need for safe affordable housing. Native communities in remote or rural areas have fewer access to resources to meet their needs. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, 32% of Native households on tribal lands live in poverty, compared to 18% of households nationwide. Families on tribal lands are nearly 5 times more likely to live in poor housing conditions, 5 times more likely to live in homes lacking basic plumbing, and 1200 times more likely to live in homes without adequate heat.
