Final Essay Proposal

I am going to analyze the work of Krzystof Wodiczko “Dis-Armor”

Krystof Wodiczko is an artist famous for creating large-scale projections of different images on the facades of buildings. He uses technology to create these projections and distort traditional understanding of public space and architecture. Thus, in a way he animates architectural monuments and gives them a different meaning.

“Dis-Armor” is a project that goes even further and challenges traditional understanding of human body and communication. The project was designed for Japanese high school students who had to go through violence or some other issues that cause serious psychological problems. These youth are disconnected from the society and deal with psychological difficulties. Dis-Armor was designed to rehabilitate these students and connected them back to the society.
Basically, Dis-Armor is electronic device that consists of helmet covering the face and two LCD screens on the back. The helmet includes instilled cameras, rearview mirror, monitor, headphone and microphone. LCD screens on the back show the projection of user’s eyes. There is also a speaker below the LCD screens on the back to project user’s voice. As a result, the device allows the user to see, hear and talk with interlocutor standing behind.  Thus, Dis-Armor gives an opportunity for indirect communication between the users who can speak through their backs.

As Giuliana Bruno noted in her interview with Krystof Wodiczko, “If the architecture was projecting out here the person itself becomes a screen.”(Bruno, Giuliana. "BOMBLive! Krzysztof Wodiczko, Clip 3.") Furthermore, the person gets a chance to see and communicate through his or her back, which changes the nature of communication overall. Finally, with the use of this device the user turns into cyborg. This completely changes self-perception and perception of the user by others.
