Delacroix

I remembered the painting on the album cover from my art history class. The artwork was painted by Eugene Delacroix, a representative of romanticism – the art movement defined by the emphasis on depicting human feelings and emotions through idealized images of epic heroes. “Liberty leading the people” is an artwork commemorating 1830 French revolution, which toppled Charles X. The bare-footed woman carrying the flag in the painting symbolizes liberty that leads the people to revolution. Modern technologies let the creators of the album cover replicate and modify the image to turn it into successful commodity. As a result of these metamorphosis, the cover contains enlarged central part of the original painting with paint brushed, big white letters saying “Viva la Vida” across the center.
