Welcome, cyborgs!

You are a cyborg.

Your mental activity is extended beyond your mind into your phone, your computer…The way you perceive the world is changed and shaped by machines. Reading this at this very moment serves as a proof of that. The computer becomes the extension of your natural ability to read and perceive information. You are integrated with the computer to produce one result – find and explore the text.

Discussing cyborgs Haraway contends, “Our machines are disturbingly lively, and we ourselves frighteningly inert.”(Haraway 2) Although the notion of cyborg sometimes seems to denote distant half-human-half-machine creatures, at this point by the virtue of doing simple everyday things we all become cyborgs ourselves. I would like to invite you on the journey of exploring the purposes and effects of Dis-Armor cyborg through your own first-hand cyborg experience.

Dis-Armor project is changing traditional perception of communication and influence of technology on it. Dis-Armor offers its user his or her own cyborg experience. Meanwhile, the observer of the Dis-Armor user gets a different prospective on the nature of communication through the encounter with the Dis-Armor user and communicating with what appears to be a human being and a machine at the same time.

In this project you can get your cyborg experience through using this computer and Internet page as an extension of your possibilities to find and navigate information. First you will take a path to find out more about the project. Next, you will have an opportunity to see Dis-Armor experience from the user's point of you. Then, the observer path will show important aspects from observer's standpoint. Finally, you will be led to a culmination of the project - Encounter of the user and the observer. This path examines the aspect of mimetic communication caused by the encounter of two parties together with implications it has on resolving social issue of alienated Japanese youth.

Ultimately, the project aims to make you conscious of large scale impacts of technology on our lives. Simply going through this project confirms that the user of the computer is a cyborg - half-human -half-machine as he or she uses her brain to cooperate with the program "brain" of the "machine" or the computer. Furthermore, the Dis-Armor project makes direct connection between technological advances and modern social issues. Thus, it also makes people aware of implications technology has on daily lives and resolving these issues.

So, you are a cyborg and have been one for as long as you have been using external technological resources for enhancing your mental capacities. Now, in order to embark on your first conscious cyborg experience, please proceed to the next page.
