Understory 2020

Seward

The fjord is endless.
Grey and blue rising and falling,
swaying and crashing. The seagulls’
cries in the sky accompany the
waves in discord, and yet they
harmonize.

Something is in the water— an otter
— or perhaps a seal— and it greets
the rocks and anyone blessed
to visit. The small creature idles,
then disappears beneath the waves,
and yet it pops in and out of sight.

The sea is all around mankind,
the sights, the smell, the sprays
flying off the waves and sprinkling
ever so gently, the sounds of
splashing against and embracing the
rocky wall.

Whatever there was, all that
exists now is tranquility.
